"We cannot change the outcome, but we can affect the journey."

Ann Richardson

Our Volunteer Program

At Luna Del Valle Hospice, our volunteers provide a hand to hold, an ear to listen, and a friend

to laugh and play games with. Volunteers aim to improve the quality of life through

compassionate presence based on the individualized needs and interests of our patients.

Whether it be hosting a game day at the assisted living facility, reading to our patients, helping

with journaling a life review, or simply speaking to our patients, volunteers provide a wide

range of support to be an additional presence in their life to ease the emotional upheaval at the

end of life, which provides patients and their families with peace of mind and support.

Volunteering For Us

Hospice volunteers help make the end-of-life transition more positive and comfortable for our

patients in their home, or in assisted living facilities. The end-of-life transition can bring

uncertainty and unease for our patients and their families. Volunteering for hospice helps ease

this burden by providing companionship and comfort through presence.

All LDV Hospice volunteers must complete hospice volunteer orientation after submitting a

volunteer application. Orientation consists of online learning videos, interactive exercises, and

engaging in in-person instruction.

After the required training, volunteers may choose to work in one of the following capacities:

Direct Patient Volunteer

This role serves as a friend to the patient and family offering support and encouragement.  Probably the most meaningful part of this support is in respite care when a volunteer sits with the patient while the caregiver takes a break to rest or attend to personal needs.  Direct patient volunteers may also do special things like run errands for the family, or simply to lend a supportive, compassionate, listening ear when needed.

Support Volunteer

This role works in the LDV Hospice Main Office and performs clerical tasks such as answering phones, filing paperwork, office receptionist, or assisting with bulk mailing. These volunteers do not interact with patients, but rather assist in daily office tasks to help assure all work is completed and the office is running smoothly.
